Policy. It’s a term we hear often but how well do we understand it? How are public policies made and changed, and can your research influence the process? Does it need to influence policy directly in order to effect health system changes? Learn a little bit about the policy decision making process in government and some key issues to consider when approaching decision makers about using your research findings to drive positive change.
A panel of family members from the four facilities highlighted in the Quality Exchange long-term care series will discuss their experiences with having a loved one in care. The discussion will be hosted by two members from the Health Quality Council of Alberta's Patient and Family Advisory Committee.

Successfully implemented research is completely contingent on recruitment of ample participants that fit inclusion criteria. Donna Thomson, parent and author and Dr. Lach, Associate Professor at McGill University, will discuss challenges associated with recruiting participants from parent and researcher perspectives, and they will identify strategies that increase likelihood of participation. Understanding the dialectic between parent motivation for participation in research and what researchers need for a successful study will shed light on pragmatic approaches that complement these perspectives.
Older adult residents in a Long-term and Assisted Living care facility in northern British Columbia partnered with researchers from the University of Northern British Columbia and representatives of the Northern Health Authority to inform development and planning of new gardening and horticulture program focused on promotion of the natural environment in their facility.
In this session we will explore how research teams and patient-partners can best facilitate a reciprocal relationship that ultimately enhances research progress. Specifically, what are the potential drivers of a successful reciprocal relationship and how can this be realized in patient-oriented research projects?
In this session, we will introduce some of the key historical, contextual, and ethical considerations when considering research involving First Nation peoples and populations; explore the importance of integrating both Indigenous and Western knowledge in research approaches; discuss the First Nation principles of ownership, control, access, possession (OCAP®); and share perspectives on patient-oriented research as Indigenous researchers and community members.

The goal of this virtual discussion is to expand our understanding how people from Indigenous communities experience patient safety. After hearing the perspectives of patients, providers and leaders from Indigenous communities on how they perceive safety and what solutions are/ can be implemented, we will leave the session with at least one practical idea for engaging all patients, families and/or the public in improving patient safety.
Marcia will discuss Indigenous leadership in historical and contemporary contexts, illuminating ancestral systems that were egalitarian, requiring a balance of male and female roles in families, clans and communities. Drawing from her knowledge of Gitxsan and Kwakwaka’wakw cultures, Marcia will discuss the roles of Indigenous women in leadership. Through her work in examining Indigenous laws embedded in ceremony, Marcia will discuss ways in which ancestral principles and practices can be applied in contemporary leadership contexts.
