Participant, Workshop to Review Patient Information Sheets

The BC Emergency Medicine Network is seeking northern patient partners to provide their input and expertise to modify information sheets given to patients when they leave the emergency department. Join us for a full day of small working group sessions with lots of nutrition breaks and hopefully some fun!

Aim

To ensure that the patient information sheets on the BC Emergency Medicine Network website are appropriate, beneficial and useful to patients, as they are the ones who receive them.

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patients in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.

Eligibility

Open to patient partners in Prince George and surrounding areas who:

• Have experience searching and reading medical information
• We are seeking people who represent diverse perspectives, which may include but are not limited to geography/neighbourhood, culture, ethnic or national origin, marital status, age, gender/gender identity, sexual orientation, income variety, education, work experience, genetic characteristics, family status, disability, and/or experiences with health challenges or health care. The composition of the workshop participants is guided by the desire to learn and to share perspectives and experiences from across a diverse population and broad demographic balance.

Reimbursement

Eligible out-of-pocket expenses such as parking and return mileage up to 400kms to attend the workshop will be reimbursed. Other eligible expenses (e.g. printing) will be discussed with your main contact on the project team.

Background

There are currently 120 different information sheets on the Network’s website covering many topics, from asthma to wound care. We want to make sure that these information sheets are appropriate, beneficial and useful to patients. The BC Emergency Medicine Network is a new initiative in BC working to improve patient care by connecting emergency practitioners with each other and relevant resources. The Network has four main programs; each program is supported by evaluation, communication, data and patient input to ensure its success: 1) Sharing best practices and clinical tools 2) Creating innovative solutions through research 3) Education 4) Real-time support via text, phone or video Through the four programs, and by increasing communication among emergency practitioners in BC, the Network will ensure consistent, best care for patients across the province. As a part of the Clinical Resources program, we have begun a project to gather patient input into its patient information sheets which are discharge instructions given to patients when they leave the Emergency Department. The Network currently holds a database of 120 patient information sheets in multiple languages, sourced from health authorities and partner organizations across the province. Two patient partners currently volunteering for the Network are leading this project and have created a review template to systematically capture patient feedback while reviewing the resources. Once feedback is incorporated, the patient information sheets will be available to all emergency departments across the province through the Network’s website.
