Would you like to learn more about how we can connect virtually with our health care teams during this difficult time? Here is an opportunity to learn about attending appointments virtually and potentially supporting your peers who may experience challenges with online platforms during this transition.

Open to: Patient partners from Northern BC

Lead Organization or Department

Northern Health, Physician Quality Improvement

Aim

The aim of this training is to help patients connect with each other and their health care team virtually. There is a desire to help spread knowledge and skills to patients attending online appointments with their health care teams. Patients are the best peer-to-peer teachers to support other patients and their families with this shift to virtual care.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

If you have a strong interest in this work but have not yet completed a PVN orientation and Volunteer Agreement, are unsure if your experience is a good fit or feel another format of engagement would work better with your availability, please contact Cathy Almost.

Logistics

  • Vacancies: 45
  • Date and Time: 1 hour meeting either Wednesday, April 8 at 10:00 am or Thursday, April 9 at 1:00 pm
  • Location: Online videoconference via Zoom
  • Commitment: seven months to a year
    • Ongoing participation will be offered depending on the availability and interest of patient partners.

Reimbursement

There are no anticipated expenses associated with participating in this opportunity.

Background

The Physician Quality Improvement Program is supporting physicians to move to virtual visits in response to COVID-19. There is an understanding that not all patients are familiar with virtual meetings and that peer support would be helpful. This training has been designed to assist new adapters to understand how to download Zoom (an online videoconferencing platform), attend a meeting and assist their family members and friends. There is a hope that peers will choose to be part of a peer-to-peer volunteer program that will help others in Northern Health use Zoom and attend appointments with their Physician. Patient and family partners should not be a check box on research proposals! They need to be involved right from the start. I know patient and family partners are doing their part by providing their knowledge to researchers from their lived experience.  It’s a win-win for us to work together through PVN to make sure our input drives improvements.
