Many organizations are creating resources and tools to support patient engagement – we’ve collected five examples that we think are good engagement reads made in BC, nationally and internationally.

NOTE: This is not an exhaustive list, nor is it an endorsement of specific resources or opinions. Please continue to get your most up-to-date COVID-19 information at bccdc.ca.

  1. Diversity in Patient Engagement Tools
Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement – Canada

In 2019, the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (CFHI) hosted a Diversity in Patient Engagement Learning Exchange, bringing together patient engagement leaders and patient partners from across Canada to consider diversity in patient engagement methods. A report and series of tools were created to support this work.

  2. BC Rural and First Nations Health and Wellness Summit
Rural Coordination Centre of BC – BC
The Rural Coordination Centre of BC, Joint Collaborative Committees and First Nations Health Authority co-hosted this virtual meeting last month. It provided partners in health and wellness with an opportunity to collaboratively plan, facilitate and communicate to improve rural access, quality and efficiency and to create a health care system legacy extending and learning from the disruptive changes of COVID-19. 3. Re-Integration of Family Caregivers as Essential Partners in a Time of COVID-19
Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement – Canada
CFHI released a new report that outlines key steps and resources for hospitals to reassume operations and start accepting family caregivers again. The report, titled “Re-Integration of Family Caregivers as Essential Partners in Care in a Time of COVID-19,” was developed with experts from across the country including patient, family and caregiver partners.

  4. Tools and Strategies for Safer Operations During the COVID-19 Pandemic
BC Centre for Disease Control & BC Ministry of Health – BC
As BC continues its phased approach to ease restrictions, in order for society to operate as normally as possible during the pandemic, different strategies for reducing the risk of transmission are needed. This document describes the key principles for reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the role of public health authorities and commonly available tools and strategies that communities and individuals can use to support the public health response.
  5. Maintaining Human Experience in the New Era of Virtual Connection in Health Care
    Beryl Institute – USA
This white paper examines the opportunity to elevate human experience during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. It’s grounded in first-hand accounts from organizations, patients and family members who highlight the cause and effect of virtual solutions in health care. Participants illustrate the necessity of simulated connection during the COVID-19 crisis in order to maintain the human experience in health care.

The question I like to ask health care employees is ‘Who is this for?’ and ‘Do we have the right people at the table?’ As a health care employee, I see how easy it is to fall into doing for, rather than doing with patients. The voices of the patient, family and caregiver are essential to ensure the patient is central to the direction and focus of the work being done.
