BC Renal is looking for patients or family caregivers to work with kidney care professionals in advancing palliative care for those living with chronic kidney disease in BC. AimRecently, the BC Renal Palliative Care committee started an Integrated Palliative Nephrology project. This provincial project will enhance the capacity of kidney care professionals to use a palliative approach to care for patients living with chronic kidney disease. The role of the patient partner will be to provide feedback, guidance and suggestions about what matters most to patients and their families.
Level of EngagementThis opportunity is at the level of collaborate on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will work together with you to formulate solutions and incorporate your advice and recommendations into the decisions to the maximum extent possible.
- Patients or family members with lived experience of chronic kidney disease
- Experience working and sharing perspectives with diverse groups of people
- A strong interest in partnering and working together with health care professionals to advance patient involvement and quality improvement in kidney care
- Some familiarity with the BC health care system
- Some engagement experience in the BC health care system is an asset
LogisticsVacancies: 2 Time, date, location: Meetings will be once a month (on the 4th Thursday of the month) via teleconference from 1500 - 1600. Commitment: Term membership for group members will be for one year if possible for the patient partner.

BackgroundThis opportunity came about by identifying the need to overcome barriers to the successful implementation of a palliative approach to care for patients with kidney disease. We are looking for patients or families living with kidney disease, particularly anyone who has experience related to in-centre or home dialysis. Their perspectives will help us understand what matters and develop relevant provincial strategy and tools to enable kidney care professionals to improve quality of life of patients and families by embracing a palliative approach to kidney care. Committee members include kidney care professionals, palliative care specialists, First Nations Health Authority representatives, patients and families.
