Working Group Member, Critical Care in Residential Care Homes

It can be a challenge to provide critical care in residential care homes in a way that meets the expectations of family and friends while ensuring the most optimal patient experience. That’s why being able to identify what is most meaningful to patients and families is critical to future care planning. The Critical Care Team at Surrey Memorial Hospital is seeking input from those families and friends who have experience with this issue to co-create a research study on improving the patients’ experience in taking care of a chronic illness at residential care homes.

Aim

Patient partners would:

• Provide insight on the care and communication needs for a better patient experience for those with a critical illness in residential care homes;
• Assist with the design, interpretation and formulation of the research study.

This opportunity is at the level of collaborate on the spectrum of engagement (www.iap2.org). The promise to you is that the research partner will work together with you to formulate solutions and incorporate your advice and recommendations into the decisions to the maximum extent possible.

Eligibility

This invitation is being extended to patient partners in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley who:

• patients and / or family members of persons living with chronic illness in residential care
• Enjoy working in a collaborative team/group setting;
• Enjoy telling their story.

If you have a strong interest in this work but have not yet completed a PVN orientation and Volunteer Agreement, are unsure if your experience is a good fit or feel another format of engagement would work better with your availability, please contact the engagement leader directly.

Logistics

• Vacancies: 1-2
• Date/Time: Seven months to one year, beginning in late Fall.
• Location: Teleconference & in-person, Fleetwood Life Care Home, Surrey

*Information will be shared via emails. The first meeting will take place in person and the following meetings will be held over teleconference. Patient partners will be provided clear communication so they are aware of the different stages of the research, and where their input would be incorporated.

Reimbursement

Preapproved expenses related to travel to in person meetings will be reimbursed (including mileage, parking, tolls and/or public transit).

Background

Why has this opportunity come about?  There has been an identified need to better understand the experiences of our residential ventilated patients' experiences and their families.  This is part of a Michael Smith grant application for nurse led research. Who else will be involved?    We have a diverse team that includes nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, administrators and managers. We will provide any background materials relevant to the initiative (e.g. Terms of Reference) during this engagement. A copy of the proposal is available to any interested patient partner to review after RSVP’ing.
