Aim

BC Renal is leading an initiative to integrate a palliative approach for all patients with chronic kidney disease. We are working to provide patients with written information about transitioning to end of life and what steps need to be involved in this process. As part of this work, we are looking for patients on dialysis to review and provide feedback on the drafted documents.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

  • Patients or family members with lived experience of life-sustaining treatment; lived experience on dialysis (hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis) is preferred
  • Our team will be selecting for diversity (e.g., age, gender, level of education, lived experience of dialysis, geographical area, ethnicity) among candidates.

Logistics

Vacancies: 10

Time, date, location: The health care partner will connect with patient partners by email or phone. If any meetings are required, they will be scheduled based on patient partner availability.

Commitment: This is a one-time commitment that will wrap up by end of March 2019.

Reimbursement

No expenses anticipated.

Background

This work is part of an initiative to develop and implement a provincial strategy to effectively integrate a palliative approach for all patients with chronic kidney disease. Our goal is to provide patients with information about transitioning to end of life and what steps need to be involved in this process. For the initiative, we have a working group involved in the development of these documents which includes patients, families, kidney care professionals, First Nations Health Authority representatives and palliative care specialists.

For this work, we hope to hear feedback from more patients and families receiving dialysis in BC (in-centre, home, residential care) on the patient resources developed by the working group related to preparing to stop dialysis.
