Background

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) can be a preventable chronic illness with associated significant poor health outcomes for individuals and costs to the health system. While it is currently thought to be a “chronic, progressive disease”, evidence supports that remission is possible and T2D can be reframed as a reversible condition. With the rapidly increasing prevalence rates, it is imperative that action be taken to support the prevention and remission of T2D The Institute for Health System Transformation and Sustainability (IHSTS) hosted the first Dialogue Session in June 2019. There were 75 people in attendance. The results of this meeting were building connections between stakeholders, expanding an asset list and progressing on some innovative ideas brought forward.  IHSTS recognizes that there is significant work being done across sectors in type 2 diabetes and that sharing of knowledge and collaboration can be enhanced by bringing together people with expertise in type 2 diabetes in the areas of research, clinical management, prevention, public health and policy. The session will bring together experts and thought leaders representing primary and secondary clinical delivery, community services, population health, patients, research and policy in type 2 diabetes.  Through a dynamic, interactive approach we aim to:
  • Share emerging and leading type 2 diabetes prevention and management practices, and identify opportunities to strengthen and accelerate their use
  • Foster connections between stakeholders to build relationships and facilitate collaboration across BC
  • Collaborate on building a shared purpose and approach to a BC type 2 diabetes network designed to strengthen knowledge sharing and continuous improvement
  • Identify activities focussed on reversing the course of type 2 diabetes that can be pursued through action groups
