Open to Vancouver Island Region, Patient partners from Island Health Region

Have you ever been confused by patient education materials, wished they were easier to understand and answered the questions you actually have? A team from the Department of Anesthesia at the Royal Jubilee Hospital needs input from patient partners to ensure that new pamphlets about peripheral nerve blocks for surgery are understandable and useful for patients.

Open to: Patient partners from Island Health Region

Lead Organization or Department

Island Health/Department of Anesthesia

Aim

A quality improvement initiative is underway at the Royal Jubilee Hospital to improve the way anesthesia is delivered prior to surgery (see additional information below).  As part of this project, patient feedback is needed on two new educational pamphlets: "What to expect before a peripheral nerve block," and "What to expect after a peripheral nerve block.”  Patients will be asked to review an electronic copy of the draft pamphlets and provide feedback via an online survey regarding content & usefulness.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

Open to patient partners who:
  • enjoy reviewing communication materials and providing written feedback online
  • ideally have had general anaesthesia and/or regional anaesthesia, but it is not mandatory

Logistics

  • Date and Time: feedback requested by Monday April 9
  • Location: online
  • Commitment: one time consultation

Reimbursement

No expenses to participate.

Background

The primary aim of this quality improvement initiative is to redesign the process of room utilization, and introduce an Anesthesia Block Room where regional anesthesia will be delivered to patients before surgery, instead of in the operating room, thereby freeing up OR time for additional procedures. This project has identified the need for additional patient education material on regional anesthesia and is creating pamphlets to fill this gap.

PVN has really helped us engage with patient partners to improve health services at Northern Health.  It is more and more becoming the norm to include patients in the design, delivery and evaluation of health services.  PVN education and supports, involving patient partners, have enabled us to develop the capacity to include the patient voice to make care better and achieve better health outcomes.
