Island Health Perinatal Advisory Committee

Island Health is revitalizing its perinatal programming and would like to invite a patient to become part of its Perinatal Advisory Committee. The committee will be made up of Island Health professionals with relevant expertise, an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper and patient representative. The committee will provide advice and feedback to the five working groups that are creating or revising perinatal practice standards and guidelines.

This committee will be consulting and decision-informing; members will not be requested to come to consensus to make decisions. Rather, they will be asked to share their experiences, opinions, and feedback to perinatal leadership about proposed processes and programs.

The patient will bring their own – and perhaps friends’ and relatives’ – experiences of the perinatal period and its associated health services. We will invite them to share about the services that were helpful or meaningful for them, and any that were harmful or not needed. We would like to learn what services they wish were provided and ask for their opinions of perinatal programming proposals. Their perspective will be taken to the working groups that are creating best practice guidance and used to inform decision-making.

It has been so rewarding to go from an idea to working with such a great group of dedicated people from so many different organizations towards a very fun and rewarding project. Several extremely engaged PVN members expressed interest in being part of piloting a patient virtual care peer support system. I am confident that this is the beginning of many more exciting collaborations!
