Creating a supportive research environment for patient partners includes a strong strategy for education and training that takes its cues from patient input. The BC SUPPORT Unit – Fraser Centre is excited to invite two patient partners to help shape their new fellowship program curriculum.

Aim

The fellowship program seeks to increase the knowledge and capacity for research teams to include patient partners in a meaningful way in their research projects. The patient partners will assist in the design and delivery of the fellowship program by bringing their patient experience into the development of the program.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of collaborate (at a system-wide strategic leadership level) on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will look to you for advice in developing, implementing and evaluating national, provincial and regional policy and/or research to ensure the health care system is responsive to the patients’ experience as much as possible.

Eligibility

• Comfortable telling their story and working within a team environment
• Open to meeting in person, teleconference and/or email
• Experience with teaching and building curriculum is an asset, however not a requirement.

Logistics

Vacancies: 2 Date/Time: To be determined with patient partners Location: Via telephone and in-person, in the Surrey area Commitment: Seven months to one year

Reimbursement

Pre-approved expenses related to travel to in person meetings will be reimbursed (including mileage, parking, tolls and/or public transit). Refreshments will be provided at in-person meetings. Other reimbursements may be discussed with successful patient partners directly once placed.

Background

The BC SUPPORT Unit is implementing the strategy for patient-oriented research (SPOR) where patients are partners on research teams. To build capacity, the centre has launched a fellowship program for clinicians and academics to learn more about how to engage patients as partners in research. For more information, please visit our website. Patient partners help create curriculum for the fellowship recipients. The patient partner will collaborate with the Fraser Centre staff to help decide on content for four or five half-day workshops and potentially present at one of those workshops, although presentations are not a requirement.
