International Overdose Awareness Day (Powell River)

  • This event has passed.

August 31, 2017 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

Every day, we see lives around us being changed and lost to overdose. Overdose does not discriminate – it could be you or someone you love, a friend, or your colleague. This year on International Overdose Awareness Day, Powell River needs your support. Get involved to prevent the tragedy of overdose.

On August 31 at Willingdon Beach (Upper Lot), Powell River will participate in International Overdose Awareness Day with a community event to raise awareness, to remember those who have lost their lives to overdose, and to pay respects to their surviving family, friends, partners, coworkers, etc.

6:00 p.m. – City Hall: Peaceful March from City Hall to Willingdon Beach
6:00 p.m. – Willingdon Beach (Upper Lot): Naloxone Training and Overdose Prevention Information
6:30 p.m. – Willingdon Beach (Upper Lot): Memorial Tree Planting and Story Sharing Ceremony

Overdose Awareness Day has been a key remembrance event for those who have died from fatal drug overdoses since 2001. On August 31 thousands of people worldwide will stand alongside the friends and families of fatal overdose victims to reflect on those who have been lost. The event is organised on the understanding that no one need feel shame or disgrace over a drug overdose.

It’s really hard to make changes in health care. When a PVN patient partner says, ‘This is important to us’ it keeps us grounded on why a change is needed and keeps us motivated to keep going on projects.
