Sustainability Failure: Understanding the Factors Influencing Sustainability of Innovations in the Canadian Healthcare System

Canada’s health system crisis demands changes that are person-centred and cost effective. There is an urgent need to address these challenges to produce innovative, effective and sustainable solutions. The term sustainability is frequently mentioned as a critical concept in primary healthcare (PHC) reform, yet little is known about how to sustain innovations to improve Canada’s health system. While there is a growing body of sustainability research, understanding sustainability is a significant implementation science challenge and few studies have considered the challenges involved in sustaining innovations or the factors that influence and ensure sustainability of innovations within PHC.

The overarching purpose of this research was to assess, analyze and provide guidance on how to improve our ability to sustain innovations within a healthcare context.

Sustainability failures in our health system are due to deficiencies in provincial and national policies in flawed policy environments. New sustainability knowledge; an updated understanding of sustainability of innovations in PHC and a newly visionedconceptual framework for invested partners to use whenassessing sustainability of any healthcare innovation, have emerged from this work.

It’s really hard to make changes in health care. When a PVN patient partner says, ‘This is important to us’ it keeps us grounded on why a change is needed and keeps us motivated to keep going on projects.
