BC SUPPORT Unit Webinar Series: Embracing Patient-Oriented Research: Are You Ready, Willing and Able?

This inaugural BC SUPPORT Unit webinar will provide an introduction both to patient-oriented research (what is it and what are the implications for the research I undertake?) and to the BC SUPPORT Unit (what is it, who’s involved and what can it do for me?). The presentation will include time for questions. Specific questions we will address are:

• What is patient-oriented research (POR)? Why is it important? What are the implications for the research I undertake?
• What is patient engagement? Why engage patients? How do we engage patients?
• What services can the BC SUPPORT Unit provide to researchers and how are they accessed?
• How can we learn from an exemplar patient-oriented research project?

Presenters:  Stirling Bryan, PhD, Scientific Director, BC SUPPORT Unit
Colleen McGavin, Patient Engagement Lead, BC SUPPORT Unit

• Stirling Bryan is the Scientific Director of the BC SUPPORT Unit. Dr. Bryan is also Director of the Centre for Clinical Epidemiology & Evaluation at the VCH Research Institute, and professor in the School of Population & Public Health at UBC. He is an economist with a career-long specialization in the health field.
• Colleen McGavin is the Patient Engagement Lead for the BC SUPPORT Unit. Colleen has experience as a cancer patient and family caregiver and is a patient partner on health research teams, helping to shape the research to ensure it reflects problems that are of concern to patients and that measure outcomes that matter to patients.
