Keeping Mom & Dad at Home: Designing Environments for Older People

  • This event has passed.

February 21, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Joanie Sims-Gould, from the UBC Department of Family Practice and the Centre for Health Health & Mobility, will present Evening Round’s February event on designing for seniors.

In 2011, an estimated five million Canadians were 65 years of age or older. This number is expected to double in the next 25 years and will exceed 10 million seniors by 2036. Most older adults would prefer to “age in place,” something that’s only possible if they are provided with the services and support they need. These needs include adequate housing, transportation, recreational opportunities, health and home services and amenities that facilitate physical activity, social interaction, and cultural engagement.

In this presentation, Joanie will highlight key challenges and facilitators to aging in place with specific attention to built, social and service environments, and highlight some of the strategies that the Active Aging Research Team uses to communicate research findings with stakeholders.

The question I like to ask health care employees is ‘Who is this for?’ and ‘Do we have the right people at the table?’ As a health care employee, I see how easy it is to fall into doing for, rather than doing with patients. The voices of the patient, family and caregiver are essential to ensure the patient is central to the direction and focus of the work being done.
