Public Survey: Consent to Treatment Expectations of Physicians and Surgeons

All physicians and surgeons who practise medicine in the province must be registrants of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (also known as “the College”). The College’s main responsibility is to protect the safety of patients by ensuring registrants practise medicine to the highest standards.

The College is currently in the process of creating a practice standard that outlines when a physician or surgeon must obtain consent from their patients and the rules they must follow when doing so. Consent allows for individuals to make choices about their medical care and is needed at many different times during interactions with physicians or surgeons.

The College is seeking public input to learn about the experiences and expectations patients have in relation to their physician or surgeon asking them for consent.

This feedback will help shape the College’s practice standard, Consent to Treatment, and determine what a separate resource on the topic of patient consent might contain.
