Member, National Parent Advisory Group

Researchers at the University of Calgary are looking to develop a National Parent Advisory Group to join us in our work aiming to develop a framework for parent inclusion in the pediatric Safe Surgery Checklist (SSC—a checklist used in surgery to ensure safety considerations are being adhered to). Help us make pediatric surgery safer while also enhancing the patient and family experience.

Who we are:

The Efficiency, Quality, Innovation and Safety (EQuIS) Research Platform in pediatric surgery is a well-established health system research team working within the University of Calgary under the umbrella of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health (IPH).

EQuIS’ mission is to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of surgical care provided to children in Calgary, in Canada, and internationally. Our vision is to define the future of healthcare for surgical pediatric patients.

Eligibility:

-Must be a parent/guardian/caregiver to a child that has had surgery within the last 3 years (any surgery type)

-Comfortable sharing their story/experiences related to their child’s surgery

-Comfortable recruiting local parents to participate in interviews and surveys

Role and responsibilities:

-Collaborate with research team to create data collection tools (interview guides and surveys)

-Help identify and recruit parents from their local organization/institution

-Identify outcomes most important to patient/parent

-Inform data analysis, ensuring parent perspectives and priorities have been included

-Contribute to national consensus meetings

-Attend monthly (phone or skype) check-in meetings

-Assist in reviewing and refining manuscript’s for publication

Positions to be filled:

We are recruiting 3-5 parents

Expenses:

You will be reimbursed for all expenses resulting from participating in this project, including travel and parking.

We envisioned this as a volunteer role, however we would be happy to have conversations with individual partners about compensating for their time and contributions.

Duration of role:

Approximate start: March 1, 2020

Approximate end: April 30, 2021 [possibly longer, if interested at that time]
