Aim

The Provincial Critical Care Working Group (CCWG) was formed to provide a provincial forum to discuss and make recommendations on strategies to improve the acceptability, appropriateness, accessibility, safety, and effectiveness of care for critically ill patients across the province.  It is currently focused on improving the quality of care related to early mobilization of those patients in critical care. Patient partners will be asked to help prioritize provincially significant critical care issues and ensure strategy recommendations align with principles in patient and family-centered care.  Additionally, they will provide input in best ways to design and communicate resources for patients and families.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will work with you to ensure that your ideas and concerns are reflected in recommendations and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

  • Experience with the BC Health care system in general, specifically in a critical care setting, either as a patient or as a family member, within last 10 years.
  • Experience with maintaining the patient perspective in group decision making, particularly in strategic committee/working group settings
  • Interest in reviewing information/data to identify trends & patterns, and in bringing insight from pre-reading to the CCWG, with additional ability to research more information on an initiative or topic and integrate new information into the CCWG context
  • Comfortable in fast-paced and respectful group settings, with an ability to articulate effectively and succinctly
  • Patients should have previously attended a PVN orientation session. If you have not attended an orientation but are interested please contact the supporting Engagement Leader directly to see if accommodations may be possible.
Please note that volunteers who are currently employed in health authorities are not eligible for this opportunity.

Logistics

Number of Vacancies: 2 Monthly meetings downtown Vancouver approximately from 0900-1500. In-person participation in preferred, but we can coordinate remote participation via WebEx. There may be additional communication and decisions made by email in between meetings.

Reimbursement

Expenses related to travel (i.e. transit, parking, approved mileage) to attend meetings will be reimbursed. Lunch will be provided during meetings but not breakfast or snacks.

Background

The CCWG was initially formed in 2013 as an expert advisory group on critical care matters to committees reporting to the Ministry of Health.  Since then, it has developed into a provincial forum to drive improvements in care for critically ill patients across the province.  The current focus of the group is on early mobilization of critically ill patients.  The CCWG appreciates the vital importance of patient and family input in driving improvements, and is seeking a patient representative as a standing member of the group. The CCWG consists of standing members:
  • Patient representative(s)
  • Representatives from the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council
  • Members from each health authority with specific knowledge of critical care service delivery and with critical care clinical expertise
  • A data measurement and analysis advisor
  • Ministry of Health representatives
  • Paediatric ICU representative for BC Children’s Hospital; and
  • Ad hoc members:
    • Allied health groups
    • Representatives with rural and community critical care knowledge
