Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) are the professionals who you interact with, often, when you have blood samples drawn. They train at Vancouver Community College and have a variety of classroom and laboratory experiences prior to their practicum at a hospital or LifeLabs location. By engaging patient partners, we hope to add context and realism to their learning as they hear patient stories and impressions.
The hope is that as patient partners, you can share some of your experiences with blood collection – as an inpatient or outpatient. Did you experience fear or anxieties around the procedure itself or around waiting for the results? Did you have a positive experience with an MLA? What are you expecting when you engage with an MLA for care and service?
We will co-create the particulars of the workshop together, but the structure will include sharing a story, and/or your thoughts about blood collection, co-facilitating a workshop with ~24-28 students and posing some thoughtful questions for students to reflect on, vis-a vis communicating with patients and expressing empathy.
We are planning an interactive workshop for the Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) students. As a patient partner, you will be involved in the development, execution and evaluation of this workshop, along with 2 additional patient partners and our VCC MLA Faculty.
We will schedule an orientation meeting in November (2hrs), and planning meetings in December and January and February (1.5 hrs each).
The workshop will be scheduled for late March-early April (3 hr), and we will meet once more after that to evaluate the workshop, make revisions and plan for sustainability. It is our hope that we would reengage and continue on as a team and deliver the workshop twice per year (in April and August) for our subsequent MLA cohorts.
