Interior Health (IH) is forming a team to evaluate 9 of the Urgent & Primary Care Centres (UPCCs) it currently operates. By the end of 2025, there will be 12. The Evaluation Team will include members of the public, representing users of the UPCCs who will act as patient advisors. We value patient and caregiver involvement.

About Urgent & Primary Care Centres (UPCCs)
Urgent and Primary Care Centres were introduced by BC’s Ministry of Health in 2018, as part of its’ primary care strategy. UPCCs are designed to increase timely access to primary care for:
1. Patients without a Family Physician or Nurse Practitioner
2. For patients who do have a Family Physician or Nurse
Practitioner but cannot see them in a timely manner and for who going to an Emergency Department is not appropriate.

UPCCs are designed to complement existing primary care activities within a community, rather than replace or disrupt them. The locations for UPCCs are chosen based on areas with the highest level of unmet primary care need.

About Evaluation
The evaluation of UPCCs will take a systematic approach to assessing the program’s progress towards achieving its goals and objectives. Evaluation seeks to improve programs for the public.

Equity Statement
Ensuring gender and sexuality diversity in the UPCC evaluation is essential to creating inclusive, equitable, and patient-centered healthcare experiences. We acknowledge the importance of having a diverse range of patient and family advisors, which bring valuable perspectives shaped by their identities and lived experiences. Therefore, we are actively including diverse voices across gender identities and sexual orientations, and seek to foster a more representative advisory group that addresses unique needs, challenges, and barriers to care.

The bottom line is because we’re caring for patients. People who know best are those who are receiving the care so it makes logical sense that we would consult with them about their experiences. By connecting with PVN we have been able to educate our teams about the value of patient partners and how important their perspective is in our services.
