The Diabetes Prevention Research Group at the University of British Columbia is sharing important information to Canadians who are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

In Canada, around 16% of adults are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes (known as prediabetes), a serious chronic condition with major health implications. It is currently unclear what care is available to individuals with prediabetes to ensure prediabetes does not develop to type 2 diabetes.

The Next Steps Survey, developed here at the DPRG by our leading team of researchers, is the first nationwide survey that gauges Canadian’s awareness of prediabetes and their perceived risk of developing type 2 diabetes, as well as their perceived access and engagement in diabetes prevention care. This survey will provide participants the chance to share their experiences and contribute to knowledge to guide future diabetes prevention care in Canada.

We are seeking individuals who live in Canada who are at high risk of type 2 diabetes (which can be determined through our brief eligibility survey) to take part in a 20-minute online survey. Individuals who participate in the study will be entered into a prize draw to win one of six possible $400 cash prizes.

The question I like to ask health care employees is ‘Who is this for?’ and ‘Do we have the right people at the table?’ As a health care employee, I see how easy it is to fall into doing for, rather than doing with patients. The voices of the patient, family and caregiver are essential to ensure the patient is central to the direction and focus of the work being done.
