Last updated

Are you an older adult wanting to influence how seniors are viewed and treated in health care? Staff at the new Seniors Health and Wellness Centre in Kamloops would like your help to better understand the attitude, knowledge and experience required to care for older adults. If you would like to help inform staff of the issues older adults are facing while seeking wellness, please take a closer look at this opportunity.

Open to: Patient partners in the Kamloops area

Lead Organization or Department

Interior Health- Access & Flow, Clinician Nurse Specialist, Gerontology

Aim

For patient partners to have an opportunity to shift the culture of care for older adults by sharing their care experience story - what went well, what didn't go so well, what would have made the experience better, and what do they want health care professionals to think of when dealing with older adults, in order to change their approach to care.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement (www.iap2.org). The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to patient partners who are comfortable telling their story and willing to make recommendations to the group. Cultural safety and humility is important to the staff of the new centre. For this reason, it would be ideal to hear from an Indigenous perspective as well as an older adult perspective.

Logistics

  • Vacancies: 2
  • Format: In-person patient experience sharing: up to 20 min of sharing time and 10 min for questions from the group
  • When: Older Adult Perspective - Thursday April 6, 9am, Indigenous Perspective - Friday April 7, 11:30am
  • Where: Seniors Health and Wellness Centre, North Hills Mall

Reimbursement

Parking & transportation costs (within the Kamloops area) will be covered.

Background

The development of the Seniors Health and Wellness (SHWC) Centre at the North Hills Mall is a new Specialized Care Program specifically focused on older adults. Seniors Health has been identified by Interior Health as a strategic priority and efforts are being made to ensure that the voices of older adults are heard in the development of the centre, which includes education of the staff. PVN Patient Partners were included in the education of the SHWC for Kelowna and the staff were overwhelmingly supportive of this approach and appreciated the stories and recommendations of the patient partner representatives.
