We are working on a Knowledge Translation Challenge project in the Acute Medicine department at St. Paul’s Hospital (SPH) focused on improving how nurses assess and recognize delirium in patients.
Delirium is a sudden change in mental status that can cause confusion, trouble focusing, and changes in alertness. If it is not recognized early, delirium can lead to serious complications. In Acute Medicine at SPH, nurses currently use the Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) twice daily for patients at risk for delirium. Without consistent training, however, assessments can vary, and signs of delirium may be missed.
This project’s goal is to introduce scenario based and informal, on the spot training to strengthen nurses’ knowledge and confidence in using the CAM. By improving recognition of delirium, we aim to support earlier detection and better outcomes for patients.
We are seeking patient and family partners to help guide this work. Your lived experience will help us ensure that education materials for nurses are clear, meaningful, and person and family-centred. Patient and family partners will provide feedback on materials such as case studies, posters, and lanyard cards.
