Last updated

Have you or your family received care at Mount St. Joseph (MSJ) Hospital? Are you interested in participating in a workshop to explore the patient- and family-centred experience of care with nurses and allied staff? Join us in planning the workshop and then presenting recommendations about respectful communication, and person-centred quality care.

Open to: Patient partners in Lower Mainland & Fraser Valley

Lead Organization or Department

Professional Practice - Providence Health Care

The workshop will result in recommendations on what respectful communication and quality experience of care looks like in a busy medical unit for nurses and allied health staff at MSJ. The workshop will begin by identifying conversations to avoid and then lead to respectful messaging and tools that can be used to provide safe and responsive care experiences. The purpose of engaging patient family partners in this work is to identify the challenges and needs of patients and families based on their lived experience. We would like patient partners to share their stories directly as they make recommendations and participate in the discussion.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patients in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.

  • An interest and experience in respectful communication and priority setting
  • Comfort sharing experience with nurses and allied staff
  • Experience in receiving care (or supporting someone receiving care) at a hospital is preferred
  • Attended an orientation at Patient Voices Network and willing to sign a volunteer agreement.

  • Number of vacancies: 2
  • Location: Mount St. Joseph hospital, Vancouver BC
  • In person planning meeting(s) will be scheduled in early/mid-June
  • Workshops commence June 20. We anticipate more than one workshop will be required, less than one per month if needed, and they will all be completed by December 2018.
  • Workshops will likely be 1-2 hours in length, scheduled on weekday afternoons.

Expenses related to travel (transit, parking up to $18/day and mileage up to 60Km each way) will be reimbursed to attend the planning session (s) and workshop(s). Please note that it will take 4-6 weeks to process your expenses.

The Mount St. Joseph Hospital Medicine Unit partnership workshop presents an opportunity to improve how patients and families in acute in-patient areas are involved in decisions regarding their care and treatment in the hospital, which will have an overall impact in the experience of care. This is the first time a workshop involving patient and family partner experiences is being offered. The workshop will be available for as many staff as possible, however operational issues like getting employees to the sessions will dictate how many will be run in total.
