Patient Academic Partner, Urologic Research Study – Fraser Health

Fraser Health is looking to improve the patient experience for people presenting to the emergency department who have blood in their urine and are unable to void. We are looking for a patient or a caregiver with similar experiences to be a part of the team and provide lived experience expertise.

Aim

• To improve patient experience while in hospital by hopefully decreasing hospital stay length and frequency of invasive intervention
• The patient partner would help design patient-oriented measurable outcomes and will act as a full academic partner (including authorship in a scientific journal)

This opportunity is at the level of collaborate on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will work together with you to formulate solutions and incorporate your advice and recommendations into the decisions to the maximum extent possible.

Eligibility

Open to volunteers from Fraser Health Communities:

• Adult with personal (or caregiver) experience with hematuria or voiding issues (eg. bladder cancer, prostate disease/cancer, continuous bladder irrigation)
• Comfortable telling their story
• Easy ability to communicate with team members

Logistics

• Number of patient partners: 1
• Date/Time: To be determined with patient partners
• Location: Via telephone, web conferences and in-person (Surrey/New Westminster)
• Commitment: Once a month, two-three hours, seven months to one year

Due to COVID-19 Public Health measures, timelines and in-person meetings may be altered. Information will be shared regularly with the Patient Partner.

Reimbursement

Out of pocket expenses (mileage, transit fares, parking) will be reimbursed. In addition, travel and parking will be reimbursed for each meeting (50.00). Accommodation, travel and conference fees will be covered when the results are shared with the academic community. The patient partner will be listed as an author on any publications.

Background

This is a clinical research project co-led by Dr. Soros and Dr. Abdalvand. It will be run out of RCH and ERH emergency departments with collaborations between doctors, nurses, pharmacists and urologists. Patients will be recruited directly from the emergency department. This study is looking to use a well-known medication for a novel use. The medication is called TXA and it’s main role is slowing down bleeding by allowing the body to improve clotting ability. Specifically, the study will be recruiting patients that come to the emergency department will difficulty voiding or who have blood in their urine. This is often due to post-prostate surgery complications or bladder cancer. This study is specifically looking at reducing patient admission time, frequency of in hospital nursing interventions and overall patient satisfaction.
