In August 2025, two Northern Health Primary Care Teams (Prince George and Quesnel) were accepted into a two-year national project titled Community Baby-Friendly Initiative Collaborative (CBFI-C) with Breastfeeding Committee for Canada and University of Manitoba. This project aims to promote maternal and infant health by increasing breastfeeding rates in Canada and evaluate the effectiveness of a Quality Improvement Collaborative in helping community health services meet BFI targets.

The project requires a parent partners who has received care at the facilities within the last two years, regardless of infant feeding method. Parent partners contribute an incredibly valuable role to our team by sharing their voice and experience – helping the teams to center their work of BFI on the impact that care practices have on families. There is a Parent Partner Network as part of the project where parent partners meet in an informal network throughout the collaborative. This will allow Parent Partners across the country to come together and share their experiences.

Where those of us in the room may have debated policy or wording, patient voices made sure patients were top of mind. And as a result, significant improvements were made to simplify something that was otherwise complex. Patient voices at the table bring us back to reality in terms of what we are trying to achieve.
