Secondary use of private information is necessary to improve health outcomes; however governance is needed to ensure transparency, privacy and accountability of policy developers. This includes standards on anonymity when possible and appropriate oversight when it is not.

Background

There is currently no consistent provincial standard across the health system and no governance for secondary use of private information. This group intends on developing this structure. The Secondary Use of Private Information Working Group is a sub-group formed by the Provincial Information Privacy and Security Standing Committee, a Standing Committee of Health Sector Information Management and Information Technology Standing Committee, which in turn receives its mandate from the BC Health Leadership Council. It has been so rewarding to go from an idea to working with such a great group of dedicated people from so many different organizations towards a very fun and rewarding project. Several extremely engaged PVN members expressed interest in being part of piloting a patient virtual care peer support system. I am confident that this is the beginning of many more exciting collaborations!
