Aim

The Secondary Use of Private Information Working group is a provincial working group to develop standards and consistency of using personal and health information for purposes other than providing care. Examples include research and quality improvement initiatives within the health system. Secondary use of private information is necessary to improve health outcomes; however governance is needed to ensure transparency, privacy and accountability of policy developers. We need your perspective to ensure reasonable standards are developed around the use of information without consent while respecting privacy. This includes standards on anonymity when possible and appropriate oversight when it is not.

Background

There is currently no consistent provincial standard across the health system and no governance for secondary use of private information. This group intends on developing this structure. The Secondary Use of Private Information Working Group is a sub-group formed by the Provincial Information Privacy and Security Standing Committee, a Standing Committee of Health Sector Information Management and Information Technology Standing Committee, which in turn receives its mandate from the BC Health Leadership Council. I have learned so much about innovation and capacity building by being part of PVN. I signed up to build my leadership skills, however, I experience benefits for myself, my community and Indigenous peoples throughout the province. I understand more about the complexities and opportunities required to improve health care.
