Are you interested in improving the quality of life for people living with chronic kidney disease in BC through a palliative approach to kidney care? If you are a patient living with kidney disease or a family caregiver, and would like to collaborate with kidney care professionals to strengthen the palliative care approach, this may be the opportunity for you!

Role description
The BC Renal Palliative Care Committee works to ensure that patients living with chronic kidney disease have access to high quality comprehensive and well integrated kidney palliative care. The committee oversees and coordinates efforts that will advance a palliative approach to kidney care that includes patient identification, advance care planning, symptom assessment and management, and care of the
dying patient and bereavement in all types of kidney care (i.e. non-dialysis and dialysis care).

Committee membership includes patient partners, clinical and administrative leaders from provincial and regional health authorities and BC Renal. Members will work together by sharing their perspectives to enhance strategic planning and implementation of integrated kidney palliative care. Patient partners are instrumental in guiding future work as we strive to optimize quality of life for patients living with chronic kidney disease.

The bottom line is because we’re caring for patients. People who know best are those who are receiving the care so it makes logical sense that we would consult with them about their experiences. By connecting with PVN we have been able to educate our teams about the value of patient partners and how important their perspective is in our services.
