New graduates of health practitioner programs often experience difficulty in the initial period of transitioning from their role as a student into their professional role. Island Health has been supporting this transition since 2005. In 2022, we implemented 3, full-day new graduate workshops for new nurse graduates. Now we want to include allied health new graduates (e.g. respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, dieticians). We want to create a full-day session that is focused on person-centred care and interprofessional collaboration.
We are bringing together a working group to design the curriculum for the day. We are inviting clinical educators, new graduates, patient partners, and other key interest groups. We will meet virtually on a weekly or biweekly basis for about an hour over 2-3 months to discuss the topics for the session and create any content. We are hoping to have the workshop designed for September 2025 with implementation targeted for October 2025.
Please join us in providing the patient partner perspective on how health care practitioners can improve and strengthen relationship-focused care/services.
The curriculum we anticipate creating will take the form of case scenarios with guided questions to facilitate small group discussions with new graduates who will have been working for about 6 months. There will be an opportunity post implementation (in Nov/Dec) for working group members to review the evaluation data and make change recommendations to strengthen the case scenarios and workshop facilitation.
