Interior Health Working Group for Individuals Who Have Had an Amputation

Phantom pain (pain in the region below the level of amputation) can limit amputees in their journey to recovery. Typically this type of pain does not respond to normal pain medications. Mirror therapy is a technique used that when you focus on seeing your unaffected limb and the reflection of it, the brain sees both limbs moving. Not all amputees experience this pain, but for those that do, it can be variable as to how intense it is. This handout will not be a stand alone handout, as the patient will also receive education from their physical therapist, who will work with the patient to teach the correct technique.

The goal of this request is to review the material on this handout, and provide feedback on anything that does not make sense, or does not read well. I would email the document to you, ask you to read it and then respond with any feedback that you may have. It is a double sided one page document with pictures. It is meant to be at a relatively easy reading level.

Ideally it would be nice to have a patient that has had an amputation respond to this request, but anyone that can provide a basic patient or family member opinion would also be beneficial.

Where those of us in the room may have debated policy or wording, patient voices made sure patients were top of mind. And as a result, significant improvements were made to simplify something that was otherwise complex. Patient voices at the table bring us back to reality in terms of what we are trying to achieve.
