HIMSS British Columbia (BCHIMSS), in collaboration with Novametra, is conducting a scan to understand how artificial intelligence is being used across the BC health care system. This work looks at many parts of the ecosystem, including clinical care, organizations, technology, and governance. As one important part of this work, we are also exploring what these changes mean from a patient perspective, including AI used behind the scenes or directly by patients through apps and digital tools.

A key goal of this work is to make sure patient perspectives help shape how AI is introduced and used in health care. We want to learn from patients who have used AI tools to manage their health, or have experienced AI being used as part of their care. Your insights will help healthcare leaders better understand patient priorities, concerns, and expectations, and support more patient-centered approaches to AI.

Participation involves a one-time 30-60 minute virtual interview about your experiences, perspectives, and what you think healthcare organizations should understand about patients and AI. Participants selected for an interview will receive a $40 honorarium in recognition of your time.

The British Columbia Chapter of the Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society (BCHIMSS) is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit community organization. We bring together people who care about improving healthcare in British Columbia, including patients, students, clinicians, healthcare leaders, technologists, and policymakers. Our work focuses on learning, collaboration, and sharing knowledge about how digital tools and information can be used responsibly and equitably to improve healthcare experiences and outcomes.

We are drawing participants from both the PVN network and the existing BCHIMSS patient partner community, and anticipate strong interest in this opportunity. We encourage all patients who meet the criteria to apply and are grateful for the interest and willingness of patient partners to contribute their experience and insights; however, depending on the number of applicants, a limited number of patients may be selected for interviews.

The question I like to ask health care employees is ‘Who is this for?’ and ‘Do we have the right people at the table?’ As a health care employee, I see how easy it is to fall into doing for, rather than doing with patients. The voices of the patient, family and caregiver are essential to ensure the patient is central to the direction and focus of the work being done.
