If you want to take your solutions and ideas to new heights, join us at Design Thinking: A Human-Centred Approach to Health Care Improvement! We will curate recent knowledge around innovation and design thinking, and provide the opportunity to apply design thinking methodology to real-life health care challenges. This interactive session will help you do things differently!

Aim

Participants will have the opportunity to explore a well-defined practice framework that works to identify the issue, define it from the end-user’s perspective and integrate more creative and human-centred approaches to explore and test solutions. Participants in this workshop will largely be health authority employees or staff from similar health organizations. Our hope in sponsoring patient partners to attend is to expand perspectives represented and shared at the event. Additionally, through attending the workshop, patient partners will further develop their own skills and knowledge in the design thinking methodology, which can be applied in future situations outside of the workshop. By the end of this workshop, you’ll be able to: -Discover ways design thinking can support change and transformation -Explore the five-step design thinking process -Apply the design thinking process to a real-life health care challenge -Develop a human-centred approach to problems and solutions -Apply selected innovation & design thinking tools and techniques

This opportunity is at the level of inform on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that you will be provided with balanced and objective information to assist in understanding alternatives and solutions.

Eligibility

  • Patient partners in the Lower Mainland region
  • Interested in learning about innovation and design thinking and developing creative ways to approach problems and opportunities
  • Previously attended a PVN orientation session and completed the Volunteer Agreement. If you have not attended an orientation session but are interested in this opportunity, please contact Shannon Sahota directly to see if accommodations may be possible.

Reimbursement

We will provide each patient partner with a discount code to waive the $100 workshop registration fee. Approved expenses related to travel will also be reimbursed by the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council.

Background

The BCPSQC Learning & Capability Development team works to build capability and capacity for improvement through a variety of avenues: Quality Academy, Board & Executive Learning Series, Quality Forum, online learning opportunities like the #QualityChat and Quality Café that are open to anyone and free to join as well as in-person workshops – such as this upcoming Design Thinking: A Human-Centred Approach to Health Care Improvement session. Quality improvement requires knowledgeable and skilled people at all levels of BC’s health system. Change is more likely to be sustained if the people leading it are properly equipped to do so. Therefore, the BCPSQC has committed to ensure that the members of the Patient Voices Network are included in learning opportunities to ensure that they feel comfortable and informed when working on quality improvement initiatives throughout the system. We are inviting patient partners from the Lower Mainland for this particular workshop. We will be offering similar opportunities for patient partners to attend workshops in various other regions soon.
