Our Initiative
The East Kootenay Regional Perioperative Management Committee works to improve surgical and endoscopy services across the region by ensuring care is safe, timely, and patient-centered.

Patient Engagement Objective
We want to include patient partners in our planning discussions so their experiences and perspectives help shape decisions about surgical services. Their input will guide improvements in access, quality, and communication for patients and families.

Logistics
Patient partners will join our committee meetings (held monthly, with virtual attendance options) and participate in discussions about priorities, resource planning, and quality improvement. We will provide orientation, meeting materials, and ongoing support to ensure they feel prepared and valued.

1. Meeting Details:
Frequency: Quarterly meetings.
Format: Virtual (with technology support provided).
Duration: Typically 1–2 hours per meeting.

2. Orientation & Support:
Patient partners will receive onboarding and orientation materials.
Ongoing support from the committee and PVN to ensure comfort and understanding.

3. Preparation Expectations:
Review meeting agendas and materials in advance.
Participate in discussions and share experiences relevant to surgical and endoscopy services.

4. Confidentiality:
Patient partners will be expected to maintain confidentiality regarding committee discussions.

5. Impact:
Patient partners will share their experiences and perspectives on surgical and endoscopy services. Their input will help the committee:

-Quality Improvement: Shape strategies to improve patient safety, communication, and overall experience by highlighting areas where care can be more patient-centered.
-Policy and Process Development: Provide feedback on proposed changes to surgical processes, helping ensure they reflect patient values and expectations.
-Strategic Alignment: Inform decisions that support Interior Health and Ministry of Health priorities while maintaining a strong focus on patient-centered care.

I was thrilled to discover the Patient Voices Network, where the array of places to be the voice of a patient is vast and incredibly interesting. Besides my ongoing “gig” with the BC Emergency Medicine Network, I have enjoyed being involved in several one-off initiatives. I love working with professionals who genuinely value the perspectives of their patient partners.
