The aim of this engagement is for students to hear a first-hand account from a cardiac patient of their experience from the onset of symptoms to a diagnosis, treatment and their outcome. The patient partner will be asked to relay their story including details of the different tests that were performed and the types of health care practitioners they encountered. There will be time allotted for students to ask questions. Patient partners can answer as they see fit or decline to answer.

For questions about the Cardiology Technology Program or Engagement details, please contact: Lucy Marchiori, BCIT Cardiology Lab/Clinical Instructor at: lmarchiori1@bcit.ca

The Engagement will include Story Telling & Q&A with the patient partner role being that of Speaker.

This is an in-person engagement taking place on the Burnaby Campus on September 14th, 2026.
An onboarding session (online) for Patient Partners will be on June 19th, 2026.

Communication Plan
Via email, the instructor will invite patient partners to participate in the lab engagement approx. 4 months in advance. The Patient Partner will be provided with the lessons plan and an opportunity to ask questions and clarify roles at the onboarding meeting (via MS Teams). We will provide the engagement details (date,/time/room number, campus map and parking info) in advance via email. Patient Partners will be asked if they would like to communicate via phone or email in case there is an issue when they arrive on campus.

We are open to new ideas from the Patient Partners for this engagement (i.e. different ways of sharing their experiences & perspectives).
After the engagement, students will be surveyed on the impact it had on them. Students will be surveyed to ask their perspective on the value of this exercise as well as the impact it had on them.

Survey Results will be shared with the Patient Partner.
Along with sharing the student survey results via a “Closing the Loop” email, instructors will include their perspectives on how the engagement went, and if any improvements can be made. Effectiveness of communication, issues with technology, time allotment, impact on students and whether learning objectives were met will be evaluated. The “Closing the Loop” email will be sent approximately 2 weeks after the engagement.

PVN has really helped us engage with patient partners to improve health services at Northern Health.  It is more and more becoming the norm to include patients in the design, delivery and evaluation of health services.  PVN education and supports, involving patient partners, have enabled us to develop the capacity to include the patient voice to make care better and achieve better health outcomes.
