This 2-hour workshop is designed for Radiation Therapy students to practice assessing and managing side effects in patients receiving radiation treatment. Patient Partners, who have experienced radiation therapy, will play the role of patients currently undergoing treatment.

The Patient Partners are not actually receiving radiation, this is a role-playing engagement. Radiation therapists assess patients regularly throughout treatment and are the point of contact for daily side effect management. Patient partners who have undergone radiation therapy will have the unique awareness of the potential side effects. The involvement of patient partners will provide students with the opportunity to practice verbal patient assessments and convey side effect management advice appropriately. Patient partners will play the role of the patient and provide feedback to the student regarding their interaction and patient education delivery.

Role of Patient Partners: Interviewee

3-5 vacancies available

Time Frame of Engagement: 2-hour student-patient interaction

Date of Engagement: November 28th @ 8:30 AM – 11:30 AM.

An onboarding session for Patient Partners will be held ~October 21st, 2024.

Aim: The purpose of engaging the patient partners is to simulate patient interaction in the clinical environment so students can practice their communication skills and their knowledge application. The patient partner will be essential to helping the learners understand how their interaction is received and how they might improve their communication and patient education skills.

Leading up to the engagement we provide:
– The learning outcomes and goals for the learning engagement
– A template for providing feedback to the students
– An outline of which side effect interventions we would like the student to cover

-We will review the learning outcomes with the patient partner to ensure we have the same understanding
-We will ask the patient partner for input on the learning outcomes and make revisions if necessary
-We will provide students with a feedback survey (e.g. what did you learn from the patient engagement?)
-We will provide the patient partner with anonymous student feedback on the session

This is an in person engagement, therefore the patient partners selected must be from the Greater Vancouver region or able to travel to the BCIT Burnaby campus. Travel expenses are not covered. Parking passes + $25/hour honorarium are provided.

No out-of-pocket expenses are anticipated for this engagement opportunity. However, if you meet the eligibility criteria, but have concerns about your ability to participate, please contact the Faculty Instructor (email below) to see if support options are available.
