The BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) is the organization that regulates all nurses (i.e., licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, registered psychiatric nurses, & nurse practitioners) and all registered midwives in BC.

We recognize that care experiences can be deeply personal, and that some communities face systemic barriers, discrimination, or inequities in the health system. This survey invites you to share your experiences or expectations around nursing or midwifery care, particularly in situations where care may have been declined or ended.

These situations may occur when:
• The care requested is outside a nurse or midwife’s legal scope or professional standards
• A provider has a conscientious objection based on personal or ethical beliefs
• There are safety concerns or a breakdown in trust
• A client makes decisions that differ from the providers clinical recommendations

Even in these cases, nurses and midwives are expected to ensure your care continues in a safe, respectful, and culturally appropriate way.

We’d like to hear about your experiences when care was declined or ended. Your input will help inform the expectations nurses and midwives must meet to ensure they provide safe care in these situations.

This survey is anonymous and will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Please email policysurvey@bccnm.ca if you have questions about this survey.

The bottom line is because we’re caring for patients. People who know best are those who are receiving the care so it makes logical sense that we would consult with them about their experiences. By connecting with PVN we have been able to educate our teams about the value of patient partners and how important their perspective is in our services.
