Workshop: Intercultural Competency Training for Patient-Oriented Researchers

  • This event has passed.

April 23, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

This 1-day workshop will be of value to researchers, trainees, and research support staff interested in working with people from varied cultural backgrounds on their patient-oriented research (POR) projects.

This workshop will give participants the opportunity to develop their cultural awareness and skills to navigate more efficiently and effectively through complex intercultural interactions. Starting from self-awareness of our own cultural identity and intersectionality (identity wheel), we will investigate our own inherent hidden biases to further our understanding of how power & privilege operates in our daily interactions. We will also share tools and strategies to enable participants to navigate more consciously through intercultural situations.

Using MOSAIC Intercultural Competency and Diversity training materials, we will elicit cultural awareness and introduce cultural concepts using animated slides, while integrating meaningful & fun activities for participants to relate IC concepts to real-life scenarios. Participants will work in pairs/groups for guided discussion, and reflect on cultural diversity through whole group feedback, developing cultural intelligence & practicing strategies for dealing with culturally diverse behaviours and approaches.

Speaker:

Linda Davies has facilitated MOSAIC Intercultural Competency, Diversity & Inclusion workshops — in-house/external, face-2-face & online, as well as professional development workshops for MOSAIC ESL teachers since 2012, including presentations for REALIZE and BCTEAL conferences, and a Richmond Symposium. She is a certified Intercultural Specialist (2015, Norquest College), and has Inclusive Leadership training. The focus of her MA TESOL, Teacher Education (2014, Manchester) was Self-Reflective Performance Evaluations, which have been successfully implemented in MOSAIC Language Centres since 2013, where Linda’s current role is manager of Vancouver Language Centres.
