Meeting the Future Challenges of Climate Change using Clinical Informatics, Machine-Learning and Artificial Intelligence

Climate change will present several health challenges to individuals and communities. A key part of addressing extreme weather events, changes in infectious diseases, and other climate related issues will be leveraging integrated datasets, analytical tools and frameworks, and informatics technologies that use machine-learning and artificial intelligence to help clinicians make better decisions. Here, we present some preliminary findings from a survey of physicians about how clinical informatics can be leveraged to address climate change challenges.

The survey asked respondents about what sorts of challenges will be present in the future, along with what types of education and technology needs to be implemented in health organizations. These results can help health organizations plan for the future and better meet the needs of their patient populations.

Seeking the patient perspective doesn’t have to be complicated; it simply entails a commitment to ask and listen. Patient advisors not only bring a valuable perspective but also share original ideas and unique skills. Including the patient and family perspective changes the conversation and aligns the team’s focus towards common goals.
