Evening Rounds Vol. 37: Let’s Talk About Men

  • This event has passed.

November 21, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

We’re bringing you another new spin on Evening Rounds in November, with a panel of experts taking on men’s health. It’s only fitting that during “Movember” we tackle the issue of how to reach men with health initiatives and programs. Join us to hear about local initiatives making a difference in the lives of men in Vancouver, and stay for a discussion and Q&A.

As always, Evening Rounds events are free but space is limited!

Panelists:

Olivier Ferlatte, the Still Here Project

Still Here is a photo project featuring lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and two-spirited (LGBTQ2S+) individuals affected by suicide. The aim of the project is to break the silence around suicide and start a conversation about the need for targeted suicide prevention programs for LGBTQ2S+ communities.

Dr. Olivier Ferlatte is a postdoctoral research fellow with the men’s health research program. He has over 10 years of experience working in gay men’s health promotion and research. His research focuses on the relationships between marginalization, violence, social inequity, and health outcomes among gay and bisexual men. Dr. Ferlatte is the lead researcher for Still Here, a photovoice project looking at suicide in LGBT adults.

Paul Gross, The DUDES Club

The “DUDES Club” provides events and activities that focus on the spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects of wellness in men residing on the DTES. We focus on connecting men with health care professionals and other support services, as well as instilling a sense of solidarity and empowerment within the community.

Dr. Gross is a family physician with a full-time practice at Spectrum Health, where he focuses on HIV and men’s health. Since 2009, he has also maintained a part-time practice at Vancouver Native Health Society (VNHS), which provides a full range of health care services to mainly First Nations, Inuit, Metis peoples living in and around the Downtown Eastside. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Practice at University of British Columbia. In collaboration with Richard Johnson (link to his bio), he co-founded the Dudes Club in 2010.
