Brown Bag Lunch – A Quality Improvement Approach to the Appropriate use of Antipsychotics in Long-term Care

  • This event has passed.

June 23, 2022 @ 12:15 pm - 1:00 pm

In March of 2021 through a staged collaborative approach to quality improvement, the Northern Health Appropriate use of Antipsychotics initiative was developed. The focus of the initiative was to decrease the Northern Health average of clients on antipsychotics without a diagnosis of psychosis. The key elements of the project were:
•  To increase awareness of why antipsychotics may not be safe or appropriate for residents living with dementia
• Provide additional support to leadership and frontline staff
• Identify and implement key education and resources for staff
• Support focused safety rounds and team huddles on the units to proactively identify and care plan for resident behavioural concerns.

The ultimate goal of the initiative was to increase life’s purpose and meaning for residents, satisfaction of experience for families, and joy in the workplace for staff by deprescribing antipsychotics where possible using non pharmacologic approaches.
