Patient experience complements researcher experience and leads to knowledge that is more likely to make a difference in people’s lives. Learn how patients and the public can make meaningful contributions as partners in health research and how the BC SUPPORT Unit is striving to get patient engagement right. Specific questions we will address are:

  • What is Patient Engagement?
  • How is the BC SUPPORT Unit achieving it?

Presenters:

  • Colleen McGavin is the Patient Engagement Lead for the BC SUPPORT Unit. Colleen has experience as a cancer patient and family caregiver and is a patient partner on health research teams, helping to shape the research to ensure it reflects problems that are of concern to patients and that measure outcomes that matter to patients.
  • Jaime Ascher is the President of Still Life Canada: Stillbirth & Neonatal Death Education, Research & Support Society (SLC) and a member of the SLC Research team.  As a bereaved mother of two stillborn sons, Jaime is a Community Partner (patient partner) who has participated in a Community-Based Participatory Research project whereby parents affected by stillbirth conducted research within their community to improve care and support.  Jaime is also part of the research team as a Community Partner on a new 3 -year project that Still Life Canada is collaborating with Fraser Health and the South Community Birth Program (Vancouver). It is a Participatory Action Research project that will focus on supporting women/families in subsequent pregnancies after they have experienced a stillbirth.
  • Kent Cadogan Loftsgard is a Patient Partner to the BC SUPPORT Unit. In addition to his lifelong cerebral palsy and asthma, as well as his endless efforts as a patient advocate and caregiver, Kent contributes his diverse professional expertise in health media production, health specialty journalism, interdisciplinary healthcare education, and health research to complement the collaborative development and growth of the Unit.
  • Annie Moore works in Island Health’s Research Department to enhance education, engagement, and funding opportunities across the region. You can find her tweeting @VIHealthRes.
