You’re invited to attend the 2019 Family Conference on April 27 at Vancouver General Hospital!

  • Dr. Julian Somers will speak on “Addiction and serious mental illness – Two challenges under the same umbrella”

Dr. Somers works to improve clinical practices and public policies related to addiction and mental health. The Somers Research Group is internationally recognized for initiatives involving large-scale randomized trials, multi-site interventions, and population-level studies described in over 150 publications. Dr. Somers has also created advanced information systems for public health surveillance and to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and services.

  • Monica McAlduff will speak on “Best practices in action – The perspective of Vancouver Coastal Health”

Monica McAlduff is Director, Mental Health and Substance Use Services, Vancouver Coastal Health and has spearheaded many innovative initiatives at VCH, including the VCH’s Access and Assessment Centre

  • Sam Burnett’s talk is “Foster confidence to make a change”

Sam is with the Centre for Collaboration, Motivation and Innovation, which works to inspire new ways of thinking about helping relationships and teach practical skills that foster partnerships.

  • Frances Kenny will present “Hope for families: Keys to lasting strength”

Frances Kenny is the founder of Parents Forever, a professionally supported, mutual support group for parents and family members of adult addicted children (18 years of age and up)

The conference will end with a panel discussion. People with lived experience with mental illness/substance use, family members and a mental health professional will discuss the question, “Whose recovery is it?” The discussion will be moderated by June Ariano-Jake, author of “Addiction. A mother’s story.”

Exhibitors from the BC Schizophrenia Society, Alcoholics Anonymous, Coast Mental Health and others will have tables with information about their services.
