Providence Health Care invites you to share your stories about being a patient at St. Paul’s Hospital or another site to help stimulate a culture change by highlighting how patient experiences are fundamental to employee practices. If you are comfortable speaking to a group of eager new members of the Providence Health Care team, this could be the opportunity for you!

Open to: Patient partners in Lower Mainland & Fraser Valley

Lead Organization or Department

Providence Health Care (PHC), Professional Practice

Aim

We would like new employees to recognize that, regardless of their role, they are integral to the care experience of patients and families at Providence Health Care. We want to foster and sustain a culture of providing care that is person-centred, and that brings that lens to health care improvement and staff education. Patient speakers will have the opportunity to share about their care experience and suggestions for what staff should consider to provide person-centred care. Presenters will receive support from the member(s) of the PHC Care Experience Team with the creation of their presentation. Ongoing feedback and guidance will also be provided to support their work.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of inform on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that you will be provided with balanced and objective information to assist in understanding alternatives and solutions.

Eligibility

  • Have prior experience as a patient or family member of a patient in a PHC facility (or other area hospital)
  • Are comfortable sharing your personal experiences to a large group (up to 75 individuals)
  • Have an interest/ability to create your own multimedia to supplement your speaking (e.g. simple PowerPoint presentation). This would be an asset but is not required.
Please note that volunteers who are currently employed by PHC or other health care authorities are not eligible for this opportunity.

Logistics

Vacancies: 6 Time, Date, Location: New employee orientations are held at St. Paul’s Hospital on the first Monday each month (that is not a statutory holiday). Patient Partner presentations are 20-25 minutes long with time for questions, typically from 1040 - 1140. Commitment: Presenters should be able to commit to at least three presentations per year but could present more times than that, if appropriate.

Reimbursement

Pre-approved expenses related to travel (i.e. transit, parking up to $18/day, mileage) to attend sessions will be reimbursed by PHC. Please note that it may take 4-6 weeks to process expenses.

Background

On a monthly basis, new employee orientation for all disciplines (e.g. nursing, physicians, social workers, dieticians, physical plant services, etc.) occurs at Providence Health Care. A portion of new employee orientation discusses the Care Experience Strategic Direction through person-centred care. The opportunity for a patient and/or family partner to share their past health care experience at PHC for 20-25 minutes will enable new employees to understand the importance of person-centred care. A member of PHC's Care Experience Strategic Direction will be there to introduce the speaker and support them during their presentation. A potential risk for patient and family partners who volunteer their time to present is the sharing of personal information with individuals in the audience who may know the patient and family partner. Although this potential risk occurs, all new employees are required to sign a privacy and confidentiality agreement upon hire. In addition, patient and family partners are informed that they only need to share information that they feel comfortable sharing, and may choose to use a pseudonym if they prefer. We have welcomed patient family partners to speak at this event for a few years already, with great success, and we are hoping to include more of you in this important work.
