The Provincial Health Service Authority would like your help in reviewing a patient survey that is designed to ask patients what matters most when health care providers disclose a patient safety event to the public.

Open to: Patient partners across the province

Lead Organization or Department

Provincial Health Service Authority, Patient Experience and Accreditation

Aim

Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) is developing a patient survey to understand your perspectives on patient safety events and what matters most to patients when they are shared with the public. Data from the survey will be used to improve PHSA’s disclosure procedures and the experience of every patient who accesses our services. Patient partners will review a draft survey including approximately 20 questions including demographics.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

  • Preference is for patient partners who have experienced a patient safety event or have a family member who has experienced a patient safety event.
  • We would like to hear from patient partners from different communities across BC.
  • You must have access to a device with internet to complete the review.

Logistics

Vacancies: 20 Commitment: PHSA will email you a link to an online version of the survey – feedback about the survey can be provided by email. This is a one-time opportunity.

Reimbursement

No expenses anticipated.

Background

This opportunity has come about because PHSA has a responsibility to disclose patient safety events to patients and families. The purpose of disclosure is to improve the quality of care a patient receives, ensure the patient is fully informed and build mutual trust and respect with the patient and their family. Disclosing these events serves to enhance patient safety by reinforcing the values important to a culture of safety: honesty, respect and transparency. PHSA values feedback from patients and families and encourages them to share their perspective on the patient safety event and disclosure process. Engaging patients and families via a survey regarding disclosure policies and procedures is one way of understanding and honouring patients and families’ experiences and including their voices.

I have learned so much about innovation and capacity building by being part of PVN. I signed up to build my leadership skills, however, I experience benefits for myself, my community and Indigenous peoples throughout the province. I understand more about the complexities and opportunities required to improve health care.
