Are you interested in the relationships between physical activity and health? If so, you’re invited to help shape a multidisciplinary research cluster that was formed to transform how physical activities are prescribed, practiced and monitored for promoting health.

Researchers from UBC have received funding to form a research cluster on physical activity and health. This is a collaboration of 100+ UBC faculty affiliates from 5 faculties (Medicine, Arts, Education, Applied Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Science) to transform how physical activities are prescribed, practiced and monitored for promoting health. The cluster has several goals: 1) to foster relationships among researchers from multiple disciplines, patients and the public, and industry; 2) to create new knowledge that can be used to change public perception about physical activity and its relationship to health promotion and 3) to attract new grant funding. Members of the patient advisory committee will contribute a patient/public perspective on the development and ongoing activities of this research cluster. For example, members will contribute ideas for future research priorities, projects, and new partnerships.Level of Engagement
This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patients in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.Eligibility
- This opportunity is open to people from anywhere in BC. Organizers are looking to be inclusive in terms of gender, geographic location, age, culture and experience.
- Candidates must have access to a telephone and a computer with business software (e.g. word processing), and internet access.
- Patients should have previously attended a PVN orientation and completed the Volunteer Agreement.
Logistics

- This Research Cluster is funded for one year. The Patient/Public Advisory Committee will meet via teleconference every 4 to 6 weeks to provide advice and discuss issues related to the Cluster’s activities. There will be 2 face-to-face meetings: 1) a team-building and training session at the Cluster launch in the latter half of February or early March and 2) at the mid-term.
- The meetings will be complemented by emails and individual phone/Skype calls as needed.
- Workshops will be developed for networking and sharing information.
Reimbursement
All eligible out-of-pocket expenses for Research Cluster activities (e.g. travel; long distance calls) will be reimbursed according to the expense policies of the University of British Columbia.Background
