Patient Speaker – Liver Disease, Cancer Care or Stroke

Would you like to share your experiences and advice with the next generation of nurses to help them know what the patient feels, thinks and wants? This is a chance to share your story!

Aim

The aim of this initiative is to give a patient perspective to future nurses regarding the experience in primary care when a patient is suffering from either liver disease, cancer or stroke and how the patient interactions with nurses could be improved or things that went particularly well.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement (www.iap2.org). The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

• A patient or care giver for a family member with cancer, liver disease or stroke. Any patient stories about one area or multiple areas are welcome.
• Patients should have previously attended a PVN orientation session and signed the Volunteer Agreement. If you have not attended an orientation but are interested please contact Cathy Almost directly to see if accommodations may be possible.
• Live in the Terrace area

Logistics

• Up to 3 volunteers total, 1 on each topic
• Comfortable with public speaking and sharing your story
• Liver disease:  Tuesday, 1-1:45pm April 4
• Stroke:  Tuesday, 3:15-4:00pm April 11
• Cancer care: Tuesday, 1-1:45pm, April 18
• Northwest Community College, Classroom 113 in the Spruce building
• To give a 5-10 minute brief presentation about what the patient experience is from when they were hospitalized, and how the nursing care they received helped or did not help them in their journey to get well again.
• Understanding that the audience is a group of undergraduate nurses, with no ability to change past experiences, but to be inspired for future nursing care.

Reimbursement

Preapproved expenses will be reimbursed (if necessary).

Background

In this second year class on Medical Surgical Nursing, professors like to include patient perspectives to bring issues, resources and advice to the students, as they progress in their clinical experiences.
