Patient Partner, Vancouver Community College Patient Experience Day

Providing the most up to date technological advancements, as well as being a great communicator, is important to creating a well-rounded health care provider. In their quest to create great health care providers who see the patient at the centre of their care, Vancouver Community College is looking to partner with patients to conduct basic health assessments that assist their students to improve their bedside manner.

• To provide health care students with a hands-on activity which improves their communication skills with patients • Patient partners would be there to mentor and provide feedback to students as they walk through pre-determined assessments

Eligibility

• Residents of Lower Mainland communities Patients should have previously attended a PVN orientation session and have signed the volunteer agreement. If you have not attended an orientation but are interested please contact Jami directly to see if accommodations may be possible

Background

This opportunity provides patients with the ability to participate in a critical thinking class with some mock scenarios focusing on maternity cases, pediatric cases and mental health. Students would be expected to use their communication and assessments skills to assess patient care needs.  It is hoped that patient partners can provide real-time feedback to these budding health care partners in their quest to become more patient-centred.
