Interior Health is developing a patient care initiative to better understand the experience of patients with dementia and those who support them in Vernon Jubilee Hospital. Help ensure you and your loved one have a safe, patient-friendly experience at the hospital!

Aim

The goal of this initiative is to improve care for people with dementia and promote person and family-centered care. A patient partner can contribute their firsthand experience navigating hospital care as a patient or family member. Patient partners will attend working group meetings, listen to and make recommendations, engage in discussion, and be part of the decision-making process.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of involve on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will involve patients in planning and design phases to ensure ideas or concerns are considered and reflected in alternatives and recommendations.

Eligibility

• We encourage participants who have firsthand experience with dementia or older adult mental illness
• You have been a patient at an Interior Health Authority hospital facility
• You are a partner, family member, caregiver or friend and have a loved one with dementia who has been treated at Vernon Jubilee Hospital
• You have comfort speaking in front of a group
• You have comfort using technology, able to attend and participate in virtual meetings
• You are cognitively able to consent to participating
• We encourage men and women to participate equally in the study

Logistics

Number of vacancies: 2-3
Location, Date, Time and Frequency :
• Location: Virtual meetings
• Date/Frequency: Once or twice a month for 6-12 months, starting in January 2021
• Time: 1-3 hours per meeting

It is anticipated that this work will continue for up to a year.

Reimbursement

There is no financial reimbursement for this position, there is no expected financial cost to participate as the meetings are virtual.

Background

-This opportunity developed due to a noticed gap in service to dementia patients and their support systems.
-There are many stakeholders within the hospital that are involved, including frontline staff, managers, and coordinators.
-There are no potential risks and you are not required to share any information you are uncomfortable with sharing.
-The care setting occurs in hospital, starting at emergency room admission and ending at transfer offsite to a long term care facility or to another community setting
