Do you have interest in improving mental health or substance use patient care and experience during visits to the emergency department? This is an opportunity to share your patient experience to help identify best practice guidelines in this area of care.

Aim

Our initiative is to research best practice guidelines and standards for emergency department Mental Health and Substance Use space recommendations. We would like to obtain a mental health or substance use patients first-hand experience within an Interior Health emergency department (Royal Inland Hospital) to gain personal insight and recommendations on our project.

Level of Engagement

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement (www.iap2.org). The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

Patient partners well suited for this opportunity will have previous experience in an emergency department for a mental health or substance use reason and feel comfortable sharing their mental health or substance use care experience with a small group of nursing students, Interior Health Executive Director and MHSU staff.

Logistics

  • Vacancies: 2
  • Format: In-Person small group sharing at Royal Inland Hospital
  • Event Date: At Patient Partner's earliest availability on a Monday or Tuesday.

Reimbursement

All pre-approved travel expenses will be reimbursed.

Background

This opportunity is part of MHSU's plan to improve four areas of the patient pathway: how people come into ED, how they are treated/cared for while they are there, how MHSU Services connects with them while they are in the ED and how MHSU services follows up once they leave the ED. Those involved with this project will be Kyla Wejr - TRU BScN Student, Cory White - TRU BScN Student, Carla Mantie - MH Practice Lead Care Setting - Acute Care Emergency Department
