Ensuring that doctors have the education and mentoring necessary to provide good quality care for critically ill patients means they must keep up with the quickly expanding field of critical illness care. A team at Chilliwack General Hospital are seeking two patient advisors with lived experience in critical illness to help design an enhanced education and mentoring system for internal medicine doctors.

Aim

The aim of this project is to develop an enhanced education and mentoring system for doctors to improve their efforts in supporting hospital critical illness care. Patient partners will provide their lived experience into the education and mentoring system design.

This opportunity is at the level of consult on the spectrum of engagement. The promise to you is that the health care partner will listen to and acknowledge your ideas and concerns, and provide feedback on how your input affected the decision.

Eligibility

  • Have experience in an intensive care or high critical illness service in Fraser Health. Fraser Health offers critical services at the following locations: Royal Columbian Hospital, Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Burnaby Hospital, Peace Arch Hospital, Surrey Memorial Hospital, Ridge Meadows Hospital, Langley Memorial Hospital, Chilliwack General Hospital

Logistics

Vacancies: 2 Date, Time: There is no set format or schedule for team meetings. Meetings will be organic. Patient could be interviewed or join ad hoc meetings – the plan will be left variable and flexible to accommodate patient advisor availability. Commitment: Up to a six-month term Location: Combination of in-person and ad hoc telephone/emails. In-person meetings will be held at Chilliwack General Hospital

Reimbursement

Pre-approved expenses related to travel to in person meetings will be reimbursed according to the Fraser Health Travel policy (including mileage, parking, tolls and/or public transit).

Background

Providing person-centred care to critically ill patients is incredibly complex and involves a variety of health care providers. The specialty is changing quickly with new techniques with varied understandings of the best way to provide good quality care of these patients. The intensive care unit at Chilliwack General Hospital provides care to a steady volume of critically ill patients. This results in a significant worry for Internal Medicine physicians at Chilliwack to keep up with the quickly expanding field of critical care, in addition to the numerous other aspects of general internal medicine that they practice in a community hospital environment.
